I just need settings

Choose the camera, lens, subject, light and distance. Use the recommendation as a practical starting point, then save it if you want to review it later.

Your photography workflow

Steps 1–6

Set up your gear

Add your camera and the lenses you own so recommendations use equipment that is actually available to you.

  • Choose your usual camera.
  • Add owned lenses and mark favourites where useful.
  • No camera with you? Choose Mobile phone — Auto or Mobile phone — Manual/Pro.
Set up My Gear

Get a recommendation

Describe the shot in front of you. Camera Settings Guide will suggest a practical starting point rather than a rigid rule.

  • Select the camera, lens, subject, light, distance and composition priority.
  • Review focal length, mode, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus and drive advice.
  • For sunshine alternating with cloud, use Variable sunshine and cloud to receive a stable Auto ISO range instead of changing ISO every few minutes.

Prepare the shoot

A shoot keeps the route, settings and later camera photos together.

  • Choose or create a Photo area, such as London or Kent Coast.
  • Give the shoot a useful title, such as Tankerton to Hampton Pier.
  • Select a starting Place only when useful; the shoot can begin before you arrive.
  • Compare the camera clock with the live device time. This lets EXIF photo times be corrected later.
Create or view shoots

Record what happens during the shoot

Keep the process quick. Record only the events that will help organise the photos and explain how they were taken.

  • Place: a stop on the route. Capture the current position when you arrive.
  • Moment: a significant viewpoint, a camera-setting change, or both.
  • The marker is locked by default. Choose Adjust marker only when GPS needs correcting, and reset it whenever necessary.
  • Untick Include current camera settings when the Moment is location-only. Unchanged settings are not duplicated.
  • When reception drops, supported Places and Moments are saved on the device and shown as waiting to sync.

End the shoot and upload the camera photos

End the session when photography is finished. You can still rename and review the shoot afterwards.

  • Upload the original camera photos with EXIF data intact.
  • Photos inherit the shoot's Photo area automatically.
  • Corrected EXIF time is used to match each photo to the relevant Place visit first.
  • A nearby Moment from that same visit may refine the match; otherwise the photo stays assigned to the Place.
  • Review Close, Possible and Unmatched results, and correct uncertain assignments manually.
Review shoots

Review, learn and reuse what worked

The aim is not just to store photographs. Use the record to understand which choices produced the result you wanted.

  • Compare the recommendation with the settings recorded in the photo's EXIF data.
  • Review which lens, focal length and exposure choices worked best.
  • Return to saved Places and Photo areas when planning another shoot.
  • Use History to revisit recommendations that were useful—or need improving.
